In January 1999, Nanjing Medical University established the International Research Centre for Nasal Allergy (NINA) to stimulate and strengthen the Sino-Japanese and international collaboration in nasal allergy studies. NINA has carried out frontier research programmes in the fields of allergy and clinical immunology, and published numbers of original articles and reviews (see the list of publications).

NICA at Sendai
In June 2006, when 'ALLERGY' has been defined by Clemens von Pirquet for one hundred years, we promoted the NINA to Nanjing Medical University International Centre for Allergy Research (NICA) which aims to be a centre of excellence in basic research and clinical practice on allergic diseases. NICA has research interests particularly in epidemiology, molecular and clinical aspects of otolaryngic / respiratory allergies and related disorders, e.g. hay fever, rhinitis, sinusitis, nasal polyps and asthma. Two research units, NICA at Nanjing (China) and NICA at Sendai (Japan), are responsible. Current main efforts are focused on the epidemiology, pathogenesis, molecular genetics, immunopharmacology, and clinical care of allergic rhinitis in both China and Japan.
